Cat6 & Cat6A Buyer’s Guide: 8 Details to Confirm Before Requesting a Quote

A low cable price means very little until the specification is complete. Two Cat6 quotations can look comparable on a spreadsheet while describing products with very different conductor sizes, materials, fire performance, packaging and test requirements.

This buyer’s guide explains the eight details distributors, ELV contractors and ICT project teams should confirm before asking a supplier for a final Cat6 or Cat6A quotation.

1. Category and bandwidth

Start with the application, not only the category name. Cat6 is commonly selected for general structured cabling, while Cat6A is used where higher headroom, 10 Gigabit Ethernet over the full channel and improved alien-crosstalk performance are required. Confirm the applicable project standard and channel design before choosing.

2. Solid copper or copper-clad aluminium

Conductor material directly affects resistance, PoE performance, mechanical reliability and cost. If the project specification calls for solid bare copper, the quotation should state it clearly. Do not accept vague wording such as “high-conductivity conductor.”

3. Conductor size

AWG alone is not always enough because nominal and actual conductor diameters can be presented differently. Ask for the nominal conductor diameter, tolerance and finished cable outside diameter. For PoE-heavy applications, resistance and temperature-rise requirements deserve special attention.

4. U/UTP, F/UTP or another shielding construction

Shielding should match the electromagnetic environment and grounding design. A shielded cable is not automatically better if the connectors, patch panels and bonding system are not designed as one complete channel. Confirm the exact construction, drain wire and foil coverage where applicable.

5. Jacket material and fire requirement

PVC and LSZH serve different project requirements. The buyer should state the required fire or smoke standard, installation environment and any local approval needed. CE and RoHS documentation do not replace a project-specific fire classification.

6. Length, marking and packaging

Confirm reel or pull-box length, sequential metre marking, colour, box strength, palletisation and private-label requirements. These details affect both landed cost and the installer’s experience on site. For distribution orders, retail presentation and carton data may also matter.

7. Test evidence

Ask which test report corresponds to the exact model being quoted. A useful file should identify the product construction and test limit. “Fluke tested” can refer to different test setups, so buyers should confirm whether the report is for permanent link, channel or another configuration.

8. Quantity, destination and delivery terms

A workable quotation needs quantity, destination city or port, preferred Incoterm and target delivery date. Freight can materially change the decision, especially for bulky cable shipments. Comparing EXW, FOB and delivered options separately makes the cost boundary easier to understand.
