“CE, RoHS and Fluke tested” should not be treated as one single quality claim. They answer different questions, and a professional buyer should know what each document proves—and what it does not.
CE documentation: market compliance, not a performance guarantee
CE-related documentation supports conformity with applicable European requirements for the product placed on the market. The buyer should check the product identification, manufacturer or responsible party, referenced standards and whether the document applies to the exact cable model.
RoHS: restricted substances
RoHS concerns restricted hazardous substances. It does not prove bandwidth, conductor size, fire performance or channel compliance. A RoHS file is useful only when its product scope and issue information can be matched to the item being purchased.
What a Fluke report can tell you
A Fluke test report can provide valuable performance evidence, but the test configuration matters. Buyers should identify the test limit, cable or channel configuration, length, adapters, date and result. Permanent-link and channel tests are not interchangeable.
Five checks before accepting a document set
- Model match: Does the document identify the same construction as the quotation?
- Scope: Which standard or requirement is covered?
- Date and issuer: Is the file current enough for the project and traceable?
- Test configuration: Does it reflect the intended installation?
- Commercial consistency: Are packaging, marking and datasheet descriptions aligned?
Common red flags
- A certificate with no clear model reference
- A report used for several materially different constructions
- Marketing artwork presented as a laboratory report
- “100% Fluke passed” without explaining the test limit
- RoHS used as proof of electrical performance
A better procurement process
Request the datasheet and available compliance files before sample approval. Then check the sample marking and construction against those files. For repeat orders, keep an approved specification sheet so changes cannot be introduced silently.
